Water Pollution Causes, Effects, and Solutions

Our planet is comprised primarily of water. Aquatic ecosystems cover more than two-thirds of the Earths surface. And all life on Earth as we know it relies on water to survive. Yet water pollution is a very real threat to our survival. It is considered by most scholars and politicians the worlds biggest health risk, threatening not only humans, but also myriad other plants and animals that rely on water to live. According to the World Wildlife Fund:   Pollution from toxic chemicals threatens life on this planet. Every ocean and every continent, from the tropics to the once-pristine polar regions, is contaminated. So what is water pollution? What causes it and what effects is it having on the worlds aquatic ecosystems? And most importantly—What can we do to fix it? Water Pollution Definition Water pollution occurs when a body of water becomes contaminated. The contamination could be caused by physical debris such as plastic water bottles or rubber tires, or it could be chemical such as the runoff that finds its way into waterways from factories, farms, cities, cars, sewage treatment facilities, and air pollution. Water pollution occurs any time that contaminants are discharged into aquatic ecosystems that do not have the capacity to absorb or remove them. Water Sources When we think about the causes of water pollution, we have to think about where it comes from. There are two different sources of water on our planet. First, there is surface water—thats the water that we see in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds. This water is home to many plant and animal species that rely not only on the quantity but also the quality of that water to survive. No less important is groundwater—the water stored below the surface in the Earths aquifers. This water source feeds our rivers and oceans and forms much of the worlds supply of drinking water.   Both of these water sources are critical to life on Earth. And both can become polluted in different ways.   Surface Water Pollution Causes Bodies of water can become polluted in a number of ways. Point source pollution refers to contaminants that enter a waterway via a single, identifiable source, such as a waste water treatment pipe or a factory chimney. Non-point source pollution is when the contamination is coming from many scattered locations. Examples of non-point source pollution include the nitrogen runoff from agricultural fields that leaches into rivers and streams, or oil from parking lots into city sewers. Groundwater Pollution Causes Groundwater can also be affected by point and non-point source pollution. A chemical spill can seep directly into the ground, polluting the water below. But more often than not, groundwater becomes polluted when non-point sources of contamination such as agricultural runoff or prescription medications find their way into the water within the Earth.   How Does Water Pollution Affect The Environment? If you do not live near water, you may not think that you are affected by pollution of the worlds waters. But water pollution affects every single living thing on this planet. From the tiniest plant to the largest mammal and yes, even humans in between, we all rely on water to survive. The water from your tap may be filtered by a water treatment facility before it gets to you, but ultimately it comes from either surface or groundwater sources. Fish that live in polluted waters become polluted themselves. Fishing is already restricted or prohibited in many of the worlds waterways due to contaminants.  When a waterway becomes polluted—either with trash or with toxins—it diminishes its capacity to support and sustain life. Water Pollution: What Are The Solutions? By its very nature, water is a very fluid thing. It flows throughout the world without regard for borders or boundaries, crossing state lines and country borders alike. That means that pollution caused in one part of the world could affect a community in another. This makes it difficult to impose any one set standard on the ways we use and protect the worlds water. There are a number of international laws that aim to prevent dangerous levels of water pollution. These include  the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea  and the 1978 MARPOL International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. In the U.S., the 1972 Clean Water Act and the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act were created to help protect both surface and ground water supplies. How Can You Prevent Water Pollution? The best things that you can do to prevent water pollution are to educate yourself about the worlds water supply and support conservation projects both locally and around the world. Learn about the choices that you make that affect the world water, from spilling gas at the station to spraying chemicals on your lawn and look for ways to reduce the number of chemicals you use each day. Sign up to help clean litter off of beaches or out of rivers and oceans. And support laws that make it harder for polluters to pollute—the Clean Water Act in particular has often come under political attack. Water is the worlds most vital resource. It belongs to all of us and it is up to everyone to do their part to protect it.

Philosophy Term Paper Abortion Free Essays

Philosophy Term Paper Sometimes problems of mental disability and illness arise within a fetus during human development. Questions arise whether or not those fetuses should live or not (abortion). I believe that they do have a right to live. We will write a custom essay sample on Philosophy Term Paper: Abortion or any similar topic only for you Order Now No one can play God and decided whether or not a being should live. We cannot judge whether or not a person is going to be mentally ill or not. We do not know the full potential of that person and we cannot predict whether or not he will always stay mentally challenged. How do we know that person will not get better? How do we know that he really is mentally disabled? We have no right to take a life because we THINK that we may be are helping that individual by not bringing him into a life of hardship and complication. This can be compared to â€Å"ending the misery† of an old person because we think he is pain. This is absurd and wrong. I believe that the double effect principle is not in accordance to the catholic natural law. The catholic natural law states that evil may not be done that good come of it. This means that you can never have something good come out from something evil. Hence, if the double effect states that it is ok to take the life of the baby to save the life of the mother, we are saying it is ok to kill the baby to save the mother; even though killing a person is unjustifiable. This goes against the natural law because the natural law says there is no good from something evil. So, if killing a person is evil there is nothing good that could come out of it. This is why the two ideas are not accordance. In fact, they are completely contradictory- one justifies the abortion and the other doesn’t. 3) I do agree with the both of his principles because he assumes the zygote and whatever comes after it a form of human life and will potentially becomes a person. Devine describes humanity as stages. The way kids turn into adolescent, adolescent into adult, adult into elder. This can also imply that there is development before infancy from zygote to fetus. This is a link in the stages of humanity that philosophers mention of. Also, people do not realize how the infant is the same person in and out the mother’s tomb. The mother gives a name to the fetus and talks about him/her. She treats the fetus as if it was outside the womb, becoming attached to the baby. Looking at these to principles we can see why Devine talks about abortion as murder. We see the zygote being a link in the chain of humanity and the way it is perceived as an infant before delivery. Unless there is a reason for the abortion (mother’s health), abortion should be considered murder. ) 5) Warren states that the first two are enough to prove that a fetus is not a person, justifying the abortion. She expands her claim not only to infants but also to, â€Å"a man or woman whose consciousness has been permanently obliterated but who remains alive is a human being which is no longer a person; defective human beings with no appreciable mental capacity, are not and presumably never will be people; and a fetus is a human being whic h is not yet a person, and which therefore cannot coherently be said to have moral rights. So, not only does she deduce the fact that fetuses are not a person, but also the mentally challenged and ill. Warren also keeps in mind that the attributes that are relevant in determining whether or not moral rights are no different from those which are relevant. Hence, if there is signs of brain activity and resemblance this is not enough to prove the fetus as a person, justifying abortion. 6) To prove his point, he talks about how human cells are present but they lack the structure of a human organism. True human life is only recognizable to about three weeks and primitive brain function does not begin until about the eighth week. He also mentions how twins are not formed until the fourteenth day after conception. Since it takes two weeks to form twins, how can there be a soul in the beginning of conception and then divide into twins; you cannot divide the soul in half for each twin. For this reason I do not believe that the soul is put into the human zygote after conception. When after conception I do not know. How to cite Philosophy Term Paper: Abortion, Essays

Question: Discuss about theAustralian Leaders Attributes and Capabilities for Qualities. Answer: Leadership as we all say is something which a person adorns with his or her qualities, attributes and capabilities through which he/she can make a difference. Moreover there have been many discussions on how leaders perform and there caliber is judged on how making sure that there is a good result of their deeds and they can actually give away something to the society. Shayne Elliott, CEO, ANZ has been taken as the leader for the following assessment. Attributes: The person Shayne Elliott has a great attribute of what it takes to be a leader. As per the research done on him through articles on him and his interviews, he shows a marvelous way of composed nature which has made him come so far. Stated by his employees and colleagues, he is a very sharp person when it comes down to policy making and numbers. Since he was a CFO for a long time in ANZ only, he is very well versed with how things take place. (Shapiro, et. al, 2015) Being humble is another attribute of his which makes sure that he is well grounded and knows which opportunity to be taken and when. The way he has given away his career growth to the world to see it, we can easily read and research and then say that he a man with humbleness. When his long tenure in CITI group as well, he was given a chance to be a country head of a being place but instead he chose the countries where he can still be the youngest country head but develop that place. (Shapiro, et. al, 2015) This clearly sh ows that being humble and everything, he is no way far from being ambitious and as stated by him only that he likes to twist things, take new products up, and launch them. He even states that there is a lot of fun in taking the post at ANZ since its task to actually make a regional level bank a big one in its reach. (Shapiro, et. al, 2015) He has shown his skills and that he is skillful enough to make sure that the companies he has worked in, do wonders, making sure that he has been able to deliver his hundred percent in all his ventures. He has been able to even show us the attribute of compassion and loving nature. During the low times of his career, there have been times when his family needed him and he was there with them fully but not leaving his responsibilities, just like that. (Shapiro, et. al, 2015) Elliot is surely a man of his words and has been able to do wonders for the business of so many banks and much more. The person being even called as experienced and capable proves that these two attributes have been not given by the Wall Street analysts just like that because he has proven himself time and again. Moreover his qualities will take it to other heights, adding more feathers to his career caps. The company he has worked in has stakes held by ANZ and due to this there have been rumors of scam issues and so much more. This all have been done and taken up by him because he sees the potential of working here. (Shapiro, et. al, 2015) His past assignments even shows enough capability by him that he can pull off things which are going down the sink very easily and thus he can very efficiently pull it up. Since UBS analyst have even said that he is a man of integrity and a good communicator, his actions nowadays even speak volumes in terms of how things can be done effectively and efficiently. The Wall Street expectations are high but he meets all of them. Since the career graph of Elliot is quite a rough one in terms of the assignments and roles he has taken up, thus this proves his capabilities quite beautifully and moreover makes him a man to eye on as far as Australian Business Leaders. (The Australian, 2017) Moreover the way it has been done, like a straight shooter, he definitely agrees that he doesnt like hierarchy that much. Thus clearly states the way he works and as a CEO he definitely needs to know that what all is happening at every level. Since he is capable enough to build a culture of partnership in the tenure of being a CFO, he can definitely pull of a flat structure when he is a CEO which makes him the man of his words. (Vaughan, 2017) Capability was seen by everybody in him, that is why many heads of ANZ have been calling him the great communicator be it any phase of the business- both external and internal. Thus this is why he is a man who was chosen because as a CFO he saw everything in detail, he saw every part of the company inside out and making sure that whatever happens, it should be a profitable deal for them. Being said as extremely humble, there is a lot capability in him by not seeing him as an introvert. Called him as an extremely hard working leader, he is a person who goes to the core and works on every bit. Thus this a man of his word, Shayne Elliot who head ANZ and is a man to watch out for not only on an Australian front but globally as well.
